فلسفه تفكرِ عقلي روش‌مند و نظام‌مند درباره هر موضوعي است. يكي از موضوعات مورد علاقه فيلسوفان در طول تاريخ، عرفان يا تجربه عرفاني بوده است. عرفا در فرهنگ‌ها و سنت‌هاي گوناگون مدعي راه‌يافتن به باطن عالم و اسرار هستي بوده‌اند. برخي عارفان يافته‌هاي خود در تجربه‌هاي عرفاني را بيان كرده، تصوير خود از جهان و انسان را عرضه داشته‌اند. اينجاست كه فيلسوفان وارد معركه مي‌شوند و به كنجكاوي و كاوش در چيستي عرفان و تجربه عرفاني و بررسي دعاوي عرفا و مباني و نتايج آن پرداخته‌اند. از اين حوزه از معرفت مي‌توان با عنوان «فلسفه عرفان» ياد كرد. يكي از نقاط عطف در مباحث فلسفه عرفان، كتاب عرفان و فلسفه والتر استيس است. در اين كتاب از مهم‌ترين مباحث فلسفه عرفان در حوزه‌هاي معرفت‌شناختي، هستي‌شناختي و انسان‌شناختي بحث شده است. نظر به جايگاه اين اثر و تاثيرگذاري آن در ايران و جهان، معرفي، تحليل، نقد و بررسي تطبيقي آن اهميت اساسي دارد. از آنجا كه فلسفه عرفان رشته‌اي نوپا در جامعه ماست و مباحث آن منقح نشده و متون كافي در اين زمينه توليد نشده است، نوشتار حاضر مي‌تواند از گام‌هاي نخستين در شكل‌گيري و رشد اين حوزه معرفتي باشد.

Philosophy as an activity is a systematic rational thinking about any subject. Throughout history mysticism has been one of the interesting subjects for philosophers. Mystics in various cultures and traditions claim to have discovered a way to the inner aspect of the world and its secrets. Some mystics has expressed their findings in their mystical experiences and presented their vision of the world and the human nature. Here, philosophers in their own turn tried to scrutinize the nature of mysticism and mysticsʹ claims, and their basis and consequences. This field of knowledge is called "philosophy of mysticism." One of the turning points in philosophy of mysticism is Staceʹs Mysticism and Philosophy. This work covers the most important issues in the field in areas such as epistemology, ontology, and philosophy of mind. Because of the especial importance of this book and its influence in the world and particularly in Iran, introducing and comparatively analyzing, and criticizing it is especially important. Since philosophy of mysticism is a new field of study in Iran, and there is not enough works in this area, this study can be considered as one of the first steps in the formation of this area of knowledge.
