Meaning as one of the most important aspects in non-verbal relation between human and their surroundings takes form in perception process. According to the findings of the recent surveys, meaning in connection with environments having various features or for people with different individual and social characteristics signifies differently. Thus, in historical environments whose physical dimensions undergo a slow transformation, oneʹs individual and social characteristics gain more prominence and any alterations of those individual and social parameters cause a change in environmental meanings. The primary studies in the historical sites show that some people perceive or tend to perceive the same historical and primary meanings that have been perceived in environment, that is, the same environment created to present them in historical terms based on special non-spatial values; whereas another group, based on the current cultural and social values, perceive environmental meanings otherwise. In addition, some people not only discern past and present environmental meanings of space, but also want to continue and develop the same meanings which are appropriate to the current condition of the environment.
Therefore, the question of the research is this: “what is the relation between diverse perceptions of meanings in historical contexts with peopleʹs social characteristics?” As such, placing emphasis on the effect of the level of peopleʹs development in the diversity of environmental meanings in historical environments, the research hypothesis suggests that more developed social groups, based on current situations, create new meanings encountering historical buildings and contexts, while less developed social groups want to explore past meanings of historical spaces. In addition, mid-developed social groups tend to generate historical meanings in present situation.
Accordingly, the literature review on the basic concepts and variables of research showed that meaning and perception in different domains of sciences of philosophy, especially in linguistics, hermeneutic, semiotics and structuralism, has been widely discussed and intensely paid attention to in environmental sciences. In this research, semiotics and structuralism in architecture and urbanism were used for describing historical environmental meanings. Previous studies, too, showed that the level of peopleʹs social development is one of the most effective parameters in meaningful perception of environment. Being affected by many parameters, environmental meanings, in the course of time, either enjoy continuation or discontinuation and diversity in different settings. Based on these data and after the identification of peopleʹs individual and social developmental parameters, conceptual and actual models of the research were designed. Evaluation of theoretical findings of the research was made in Seyghalan neighborhood in Rasht. Seyghalan is a historical neighborhood that has had special structural role since the beginning of the formation of the city until the present time. Moreover, in recent decades, its process of physical and structural changes, especially at the structure level has been slow-moving. Thus, interpretive –historical research method was used for recognizing environmental meaning at the historical terms of space. Having distributed the questionnaires in the research site and explained peopleʹs perceived environmental meaning, correlation method was used for testing research hypotheses. The chi – square test was used to evaluate the correlation between research variables. Research findings confirm hypotheses suggesting that in historical environments, “developed”, “developing” and “less developed” social groups want to “create new meaning” , “develop historical meaning and “explore historical meaning” respectively. They also emphasize that majority of research population fall into mezzo-level group that tend to not only make frequent and constant changes in the past meanings but also continue them in agreement with the current social transformations. This research has also emphasized the necessity of more research into this subject considering other social development variables and historical sites under different circumstances.
