ترجمه، از جريانهاي نوظهوري است كه با پيدايش نخستين گرايشهاي جديد اجتماعي، سياسي و فرهنگي در ايران عصر قاجار بوجود آمده ونقش بسزايي در پيدايش انديشه‌هاي نوين دوره جديد پس از مشروطه داشته است. يكي از پيشروان اين عرصه، ميرزا يوسف‌ اعتصامي، معروف به اعتصام‌الملك است؛ او از جمله روشنفكران و انديشمندان عصر قاجار محسوب ميگردد كه با فعّاليّت‌هاي گسترده‌اش در اين زمينه، نقش برجسته اي در پيوند و همساني جريانمندي ادبيات ايران و جهان ايفا نموده، وانگهي آثار ارزنده‌اي را بخصوص در حوزه‌هاي گوناگون نظم و نثر جديد و نوگرايهاي مضموني و ساختاري ادبيّات معاصر عرضه داشته‌است. نظر به اينكه درخور نقش و ميزان تاثيرگذاري اين متفكّر و مترجم نوگرا در ادبيات معاصر ايران پژوهشي صورت نگرفته، پژوهش حاضر با تكيه بر روش توصيفي- تحليلي، ابتدا به معرّفي اعتصام‌الملك و آثار گوناگون وي پرداخته، سپس با بررسي شيوه نگارش، مضامين و نوآوريهايش، پيشگامي او را در زمينه‌هاي مختلف رويكرد جديد ادبي نشان ميدهد.
