Investigation of the Roots of the Caste System in India

نظام كاست به‌عنوان نظام روابط اجتماعي، قرن ها است كه يكي از مسايل مهم اجتماعي در جامعه‌ي هند به شمار مي آيد. در خصوص منشا، خصوصيات و نقش آن در جامعه‌ي هند، گمانه‌زني ها، بحث‌ها و توضيحات بسياري مطرح شده‌است. اين ادعا وجود دارد كه اين نظام، ايديولوژي فراگيري است كه روابط ديگر را در جامعه كنترل مي‌نماي و در واقع انگاره ي اصلي آن، ريشه در سلسله‌مراتبي دارد كه براصل «پاكي» و «آلودگي» استوار است. هدف اين مقاله بررسي نظام كاست در هند و بررسي اجمالي مشكلات و معضلات ناشي از آن است. ضرورت پرداختن به اين مسيله بر كسي پوشيده نيست؛ چرا كه بسياري از نابرابري هاي اقتصادي و اجتماعي اين كشور، از همين نظام بر مي آيد. روش تحقيق اين مقاله، اسنادي- كتابخانه اي است. در بخش‌هاي مختلف اين مقاله علاوه بر بحث در خصوص نظام كاست در دوره‌هاي باستان، قرون وسطي و دوره ي استعمار انگليس، به تعريف كاست، پويايي كاست، كاست به‌عنوان يك ايديولوژي، كاست و طبقه و تغييرات دراين نظام خواهيم پرداخت.

The caste system as a system of social relations has been one of the important issues in the Indian society for centuries. There have been lots of assumptions, discussions, and explanations on its origin, nature and role in the Indian Society. It has been claimed that this system is an ideological system which controls all other relations within the society, and its central idea, in fact, lies in a hierarchy based on “purity” and “pollution”. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the caste system in India and to elaborate the resulted problems and difficulties. The importance of covering the issue is so clear because some of the socio-economic disparities have their roots in the very system. The methodology of this article is documentary- library based, and in different sections of it we will cover the definition of caste, caste dynamics, caste as an ideology, caste and class, and changes in the caste system besides discussing the caste system in the ancient, medieval, and the British colonialism periods.
