Kermanshah and a Misunderstanding throughout History

امروزه، ريشه‎شناسي عاميانه يكي از مصاديق فرهنگ توده است كه از ديرباز در بين ايرانيان رواج داشته‎است. اين نوع از ريشه‎شناسي در مورد نام شهرها و روستاها نيز نمونه‌‌هاي بسياري دارد. يكي از شهرهاي ايران كه نام آن از قرن‎ها پيش به صورت عاميانه و غيرعلمي و بدون توجه به ريخت‌‌هاي قديمي‎ترِ آن ريشه‎شناسي شده‎است، شهري است كه امروزه كرمانشاه ناميده‎مي‎شود. در برخي از كتاب‎هاي تاريخي به دليل شباهتي ظاهري كه بين نام اين شهر و لقب بهرام چهارم، پادشاه ساساني ملقب به كرمانشاه، وجود داشته، اين افسانه ساخته‎شده‎است كه بهرام چهارم باني كرمانشاه بوده و پس از بناي شهر نام خود را بر آن نهاده‎است. اين افسانه كه حاصل يك سو تفاهم تاريخي است، در تعدادي از كتاب‎هاي تاريخي راه‎يافته‎است و امروزه در بين بسياري از مردم به عنوان اصلي پذيرفته‎شده و علمي تلقي مي‎شود. در اين مقاله، با استفاده از كتاب‎هاي تاريخي و جغرافياي تاريخي، صورت‎هاي گوناگون نامِ شهرِ كرمانشاه را نشان‎داده‎ايم و سپس با استفاده از ريخت پهلوي اين نام و پس از بررسي نظر كساني كه پيش از ما در مورد نام و معناي نامِ اين شهر سخن گفته‎اند و با توجه به ويژگي‌‌هاي جغرافيايي و تاريخي و جايگاه فرهنگي و آييني كرمانشاه در دوران گذشته و با درنظرگرفتن قاعده‎هاي زباني، با ريشه‎شناسي نامِ اصليِ شهرِ كرمانشاه به اين نتيجه رسيده‎ايم كه معناي نام درست اين شهر «سرزمين كوهستاني» يا «كوه‎جاي» است.

Nowadays, legendary etymology is a manifestation of the mass culture which has long been popular among Iranians. There are also abundant instances of this type of etymology in the names of cities and towns. One of the cities of Iran, conventionally (non-scientifically) and colloquially etymologized centuries before, notwithstanding its ancient forms, today is known as Kermanshah. In some history books, there is a legend in which Bahram IV, the Sassanid king, is known as the founder of Kermanshah since there is a seeming similarity in the name of the city and the king’s given name. They also believe that he has given his name, Kermanshah, to the city after building it. This legend originates from a misunderstanding throughout history permeated among history books. Today, it is believed as a true story among people. The present study is an attempt to describe different forms of names given to this city in historical books and historical geographies. Then, it is concluded that the proper name of the city is “mountainous terrain” or “the mountain place”. In this way different methods are applied which include studying Pahlavi script of the name given to this city, reviewing literature surveying the name of the city and meanings attributed to it, considering historical and geographical features of Kermanshah, its cultural and religious status in the past, linguistic rules and etymological analysis of its main name, Kermanshah.
