Shihab al- Din al-Suhrawardi (d. 1194), in his most importantbook, Hikmat al-Ishriiq, claims that he has simplified theAristote lian theory of syllogisms by reducing its many rules to afew by which the validity of all moods can be proven. This isdone by reducing all negative and particular categoricalpropositions to universal affirmative propositions andintroducing two meta-language rules, one for the second and theother for the third figure. This is an exposition of the non-modalpart of his syllogism and an examination of his claim tosimplifying the Aristotelian theory of syllogism
