In Search of an Islamic Modernity (A critique of Said Nursiʹʹs view of civilization)

رابطه ميان سطح تحليل و اجتهاد (به معناي نظريه‌پردازي) از موضوعات مهم در علوم اجتماعي است. در اين نوشتار تلاش مي‌شود نشان داده شود كه ميان سطح تحليل و تفكر و اجتهاد رابطه‌اي خاص وجود دارد و استفاده از هر سطح تحليل بر استنباط‌ها و برون‌دادهاي اجتهادي تاثيرگذار خواهد بود. اساساً اين سطح تحليل است كه ميزان اهميت و اولويت مسايل را براي متفكر و مجتهد مشخص مي‌كند. در اين مقاله، مقام تبيين رابطه اين دو، مقام معطوف به مباحث نظري و مبنايي نيست، بلكه مقام معطوف به كنش و رفتار يا برون‌دادهاي عملي است كه در ضمن بررسي آرا و فتاوي نمايان مي‌شود. براي مطالعه موردي، آراي علامه بديع الزمان سعيد نورسي ـ از عالمان مشهور تركيه ـ در باره رابطه ميان اسلام و غرب و در نهايت راه برون‌رفت از معضلات ناشي از مواجهه اين دو حوزه تمدني در دوره معاصر انتخاب شده است. بنابراين، فرضيه فرعي اين نوشتار آن است كه چون سعيد نورسي با رويكرد تمدني به مسيله مواجهه اسلام و غرب مي‌نگرد، پروژه «مدرنيته اسلامي» و يا «تمدن قرآني» و چگونگي دستيابي بدان را وجهه همت خود قرار داده است.

The relation between the level of analysis and ijtihad (that is, theorization) is a significant issue in social sciences. In this paper I seek to show that there is a particular relation between the level of analysis and ijtihad, and the employment of any level of analysis will affect the outputs of ijtihad or theorization. Indeed, it is the level of analysis that specifies the importance and priority of certain issues for the thinker and mujtahid. In this paper, the explanation of the relation between the two does not count as a theoretical, foundational matter; rather it is a matter of actions and behaviors or practical outputs emerging from the relevant views. As a case study, I focus on views of Said Nursi—known as Badi’al-Zaman, a well-known Turkish scholar—regarding the relation between Islam and the West, and the ways out of the problems caused from their civilizational encounter. One thesis of the paper is that since Said Nursi considers the problem of the Islam-West encounter with a civilizational approach, he gives a center-stage to the project of "Islamic modernity" or "Quranic civilization".
