شهر مشهد از جمله اولين شهرهايي است كه معابري با نام خيابان (بالاخيابان و پايين خيابان) در آن احداث شده است. مديران شهري مشهد و آستان قدس رضوي براي تسهيل در عبور و مرور اطراف حرم و اتصال سواره بالاخيالان و پايين خيابان در سال 1308ش اقدام به احداث فلكه‌اي در دور اماكن حرم مطهر كردند و براي اتصال چهار طرف شهر دو خيابان ديگر به نام‌هاي تهران و طبرسي احداث نمودند و به فلكه افزودند. بعد از احداث فلكه اول، بزرگ‏ترين مشكل كه عدم ارتباط پايين‏خيابان و بالاخيابان بود برطرف شد در ادامه، افزايش روزافزون جمعيت مشهد و زايران منجر به گسترش و تعريض فلكه اول در سال 13?? شد. در نهايت كارهاي انجام شده پس از انقلاب اسلامي از جمله احداث زيرگذر از طرفي عبور و مرور را براي رانندگان و رفت و آمد را براي عابران تسهيل نمود و از سوي ديگر مساحت اماكن حرم مطهر را افزايش داد و رفاه نسبي را براي زايران فراهم كرد. كليد واژ ها

Square of Mashhad; Appearance and Expansion Ali Akhavan Mahdavi The city of Mashhad is among the first cities in which passageways by the name of khiy?b?n (i.e. avenue) (B?l?khiy?b?n and P?y?nkhiy?b?n) have been established. The urban managers of Mshhad and Astan Quds Razavi constructed a square around the premises of the Holy Shrine in 1308 sh/1929 in order to facilitate the traffic around there and to connect the main avenues of B?l?khiy?b?n and P?y?nkhiy?b?n (lit. the upper and lower avenues); and for connecting the four sides of Mashhad, they established two other avenues called Tehr?n and ?abars? and added them to the square. After building the first square, the greatest difficulty that was the lack of connection between the B?l?khiy?b?n and P?y?nkhiy?b?n was resolved; however, the increasing growth of population and the number of pilgrims in Mashhad prompted the expansion and widening of the first square in 1354 sh/1975. Eventually, the works carried out after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, including the establishment of the underpass, facilitated the traffic for the drivers and the traverse for the pedestrians and, on the other hand, expanded the area of the premises of the Holy Shrine and provided relative welfare for the pilgrims.
