داستان نظام‌مند «استپ» نوشته چخوف، ريشه‌اي عميق در ادبيات و فلسفه روسي دارد. براي درك درست معناي اخلاقي و فلسفي اين داستان، لازم است منابعي را كه چخوف در نوشتن بر آن‌ها تكيه كرده كشف و تجزيه‌وتحليل نمود و پس‌زمينه فلسفي‌اي را كه فكر اوليه داستان در آن فضا شكل گرفت، بررسي كرد. ازجمله، كشف رمز اين عبارت- كه از زبان يكي از قهرمانان چخوف بيان مي‌شود- «موجود چيست؟ موجود شييي خودكفاست كه براي ارايه خود احتياج به شي ديگري ندارد» به ما اين امكان را مي‌دهد چنين نتيجه‌گيري كنيم كه هم منابع روسي باستان، هم آثار ن. و. گوگول، نويسنده «گزيده‌اي از مكاتبات با دوستان»، و هم و. س. سالاويوف، فيلسوف، شاعر و نويسنده كتاب‌هايي چون «ايمان، عقل و تجربه»، «اصول معنوي زندگي»، «سه گفتار به ياد داستايوسكي» بر آنتون چخوف تاثيرگذاشتند. معيارهاي فلسفي‌اي كه ن. و. گوگول و و. س. سالاويوف در آثار خويش به كار گرفتند، با تفكر ادبي- هنري چخوف همخواني دارد و وي از اين معيارها براي معرفي شخصيت‌هايش بهره مي‌جويد. ديدگاه‌هاي چخوف به مواضع پوزيتيويستي محدود نمي‌شود و او هم به ايدياليسم فلسفي و هم به فلسفه ديني توجه نشان مي‌دهد.

Chekhov, to explore the philosophical context in which formed the idea of the story "Steppe". In particular, the deciphering of the phrase "What is substance? The substance is a thing distinctive without requiring the other to its execution", said by one of the heroes of the story, leads to the conclusion that Chekhov has influenced both ancient sources and works by N.V. Gogol – author of "the Chosen places from correspondence with friends", V.S. Solovyov, philosopher, and poet, the author of works: "Faith, reason, and experience", "Spiritual foundations of life", "Three speeches in memory of Dostoevsky". Philosophical category that operated on N.V. Gogol and V.S. Solovyov, was in tune with the Chekhovʹs artistic thinking were used by A.P. Chekhov as a means characteristics of his characters. The views of A. P. Chekhov were not limited to positivism, the writer paid tribute to the philosophical idealism that religious philosophy.
