ماسون اُرسِل پدر فلسفه‌ي تطبيقي است. او با تاثر از دو جريان تاريخ‌گرايي و پوزيتيويسم سده‎ي نوزده، مي‌كوشيد تا فلسفه‌ها را در مقام پديده‌هايي تاريخي، در درون سنّت پوزيتيويستي، به گفت‌وگو وادارد. موفقيت روش تطبيقي در ديگر حوزه‌هاي معرفت خصوصاً فيلولوژي (فقه‌اللغه)، الهام‌بخش او در اتخاذ اين انديشه بود كه مطالعه‌ي تطبيقيِ الگوهاي تفكر در تمدّن‌هاي مختلف مي‌تواند دانش ما را در جهت آنچه فلسفه مي‌خوانيم، وسعت و وضوح بخشد. او پژوهش خود را بر بررسي تاريخي سه تمدّن هند، چين و اروپا متمركز مي‌كند و معتقد است تاريخ و غناي حِكمي اين سه تمدّن، بخشي از حكمت خالده‌ي جهان را تشكيل مي‌دهد. اُرسِل در كتاب فلسفه‌ي تطبيقي مي‌كوشد با طرح روش تطبيقي، فلسفه را از جزميت و نسبيت مطلق برهاند. براي اين كار، توجه خويش را به حقايق تاريخي فلسفي با توجه به بسترهاي شكل‌گيري تاريخي‌شان معطوف مي‌كند. در واقع او تطبيق را چونان مجرايي مي‌داند كه فلسفه با آن، از مطلق‌گرايي مابعدالطبيعي و نظري رهايي مي‌يابد و به عمل و كاربردپذيري مي‌گرايد. ما در اين مقاله مي‌كوشيم تا با رويكردي توصيفي به معرفي آرا و نظريات اُرسِل در باب فلسفه‌ي تطبيقي بپردازيم.

Masson Oursel is mainly known as the father of the comparative philosophy. Inspired by two streams, i. e. historicism and positivism, he tried to make philosophies, as the historical phenomena, to have some dialogue with each other within the positivistic tradition. As a result of the successfulness of the comparative method in such field as philology, Oursel believed that if the models of thought in different civilizations are studied comparatively, our knowledge of what we call philosophy would be developed and clarified. His study has been focused on three civilizations: Indian, Chinese and Western; since he regarded their history and theosophical richness as an inseparable part of the perennial philosophy of the universe. By invoking the comparative method, Oursel, in his comparative philosophy, tries to make philosophy relieved from both dogmatism and relativism in their absolute face. In order to do so, he focuses on philosophical facts with regard to their historical contexts. Comparison, for him, is a channel through which philosophy can be relieved from theoretical and metaphysical absolutism and moved towards practice and applicability. The present paper tries to describe Ourselʹs view on comparative philosophy.
