Identifying Ethical Dilemmas Facing Engineers of Construction Industry in Iran

پژوهش حاضر، با هدف شناسايي مسايل پيچيده اخلاقي كه براي مهندسان شاغل در صنعت ساخت و ساز در ايران شكل مي‌گيرد، انجام شده است. مسيله پيچيده اخلاقي اشاره به يك موقعيت تصميم‌گيري دارد كه در آن، ملاحظات اخلاقي باعث مي‌شوند گزينه‌هاي مختلف هر يك به صورتي نامطلوب بوده و در نتيجه تصميم‌گيري از نظر اخلاقي پيچيده شود. براي انجام پژوهش، ابتدا يك چارچوب نظري مبتني بر پژوهش‌هاي پيشين، توسعه يافته و سپس پژوهش با بهره‌گيري از روش پژوهش كيفي و رويكردي اكتشافي انجام شده است. روش گردآوري داده‌ها، مصاحبه‌هاي عميق فردي و روش تحليل آن‌ها، تحليل مضمون‌ بوده است. افراد مورد مصاحبه، مهندسان فعال در صنعت ساخت و ساز و مشغول به فعاليت مهندسي يا تركيبي از فعاليت‌هاي مهندسي و مديريتي بوده‌اند. مصاحبه‌ها به صورت ‌ساختارنيافته و بر مبناي سوالات اقتضايي مبتني بر چارچوب نظري پژوهش پيش رفته است. يافته‌هاي پژوهش نشان مي‌دهد كه موضوع پيچيده اخلاق در محيط كاري مهندسي در صنعت ساخت و ساز ايران، شايسته‌ پژوهش گسترده‌تري براي تكميل شناسايي، ريشه‌يابي و ارايه‌ راهكار براي حل آن‌ها است. مسايل متعدد و متنوعي و برخي از علل وقوع اين مسايل شناسايي و به‌طور خلاصه معرفي شده است. يكي از نتايج مهم كسب شده اين است كه عمده مسايل پيچيده اخلاقي، براي مهندسان فعال در حوزه اجرا و داراي موقعيت‌هاي مديريتي به وقوع مي‌پيوندد.

This research was performed with the goal of identifying the ethical dilemmas facing engineers working in the construction industry in Iran. Ethical dilemma refers to a decision making situation in which different ethical considerations render every alternative be ethically undesired and as a result, the decision making to be morally complicated. At first, a theoretical framework was developed based on the previous research and then the study carried out utilizing a qualitative research method with an exploratory approach. In depth individual interviews was employed for gathering the required data and thematic analysis was used for analyzing the gathered data. Interviewees were engineers participating in Iran’s construction industry either performing pure engineering tasks, or a combination of engineering and management tasks. The interviews were unstructured and conducted with contingency questions based on the research’s theoretical framework. Findings reveal that this issue, i.e. detecting ethical dilemmas in the workplace of engineers participating in the construction industry in Iran, is a valid one, worth further extensive research to complete the identification, rootting and proposing solutions for the ethical dilemmas. Numerous and various dilemmas have been detected and introduced. Some roots of these dilemmas have also been recognized and introduced briefly. One of the most important conclusions is that most of the ethical dilemmas occur for the engineers engaged in operational (against design) and management tasks
