Evaluation of apoptotic cell death in adult motoneurons and degenerative changes of their synapses can be useful in understanding the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and their treatment. In the present study we investigated the axotomy-induced degenerative changes of spinal motoneurons in adult rats at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months following transection of the sciatic nerve using morphometry and electron microscopy. In the 1 week and 1 month groups many chromatolytic neurons were found, but in the 3 month group the chromatolytic reaction diminished. In the I day group there was no remarkable reduction in the number of motoneurons, whereas the other groups showed significant reductions. Ultrastructural studies proved that axotomy-induced cell death in adult motoneurons was apoptosis. In all groups, except the 1 day group, apoptotic neurons were found and their numbers increased with time.
