Decontamination Following in Nuclear Accidents

Nuclear and radioactive decontamination is similar to chemical decontamination, but is not an emergency. Before decontamination of casualties, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (if necessary) must be done and life threatening injuries should be managed and then the casualties can be evacuate to a decontamination center. where decontamination of protecting clothing and body takes place, and finally, internal decontamination is done. Location of contamination and areas is determined by a radiomonitor. For decontamination of contaminated areas, topical standard solution is applied and then washed with warm water and liquid soap. The eyes, skin, burn, injuries, mouth, and nasal orifices, are washed with normal saline for 10-15 mins. Internal decontamination consists of application of methods and material to reduce further absorption of radioactive elements, chelator therapy, blocking agents, and dilating liquids.
