بررسي آشناييِ مدرسان زبان انگليسي با فرهنگ خارجي از منظر توانش بين‌فرهنگي

Exploring Iranian EFL Teachers’ Familiarity with Foreign Culture in terms of Intercultural Competence

در جهان امروز كه اجزاي درونش به طور فرهنگي با يكديگر در ارتباطند، فهم فرهنگي، مولفه‌ي اصلي ارتباط يا عدم ارتباط شمرده مي‌شود. بدين معنا كه اهداف يادگيري زبان را ديگر نمي‌توان تنها در قالب فرآيندي زباني در نظر گرفت، بلكه بايستي يادگيري زبان را در راستاي توانش ارتباطيِ بين‌فرهنگي سوق داد. بنابراين، مدرسان زبان خارجي ملزم به استفاده و ارتقاي توانش بين‌فرهنگي در بين زبان‌آموزانشان هستند. در نگاه اول، اين‌طور به نظر مي‌آيد كه مدرسان به قدر كافي با فرهنگ‌هاي زبان خارجي كه تدريس مي‌كنند آشنا باشند، در نتيجه تحقيق حاضر، منطقاً در پي بررسي ميزان آشناييِ مدرسان ايراني با فرهنگ‌هاي خارجي و آمادگي‌شان براي آموزش توانش بين‌فرهنگي است. البته از طرفي اين تحقيق به درك مدرسان از پروفايل يادگيريِ فرهنگيزبانيِ زبان‌آموزانشان نيز مي‌پردازد. بدين منظور، از 120 مدرس ايراني كه در موسسات خصوصي مشهد به تدريس زبان انگليسي مشغول بودند خواسته شد به سوالات بخش 4 و 5 پرسشنامه اي تحت عنوان «مدرسان زبان خارجي و توانش بين‌فرهنگي كه توسط لايز سركو (2005) طراحي شده پاسخ دهند. يافته‌هاي تحقيق نشان داد كه مدرسان به آشنايي و آمادگي بيشتر به منظور بين‌فرهنگي‌سازيِ آموزش زبان خارجي و ارتقاي پروفايل يادگيريِ فرهنگيِ زبان‌آموزان از منظر توانش بين‌فرهنگي نيازمندند.

In today’s multiculturally interconnected world, cultural understanding is the key to communication and a buffer to communication breakdown. That is, the objectives of language learning cannot be viewed as a mainly linguistic task anymore; they should be directed towards achievement of intercultural communicative competence. Therefore, the foreign language teachers should utilize and promote the acquisition of intercultural competence in their learners. However, they themselves, in the first place, ought to be sufficiently familiar with the foreign cultures of the language they teach. Hence, the rational of this study was to explore how familiar Iranian teachers are with the foreign cultures and to what extent they are prepared for teaching intercultural competence. On the other hand, this study addresses teachers’ perceptions of their pupils’ languageandculture learning profile as well. To do so, 120 Iranian English teachers teaching in private English institutes of Mashhad were asked to answer the sections 4 and 5 of a survey entitled ‘Foreign Language Teachers and Intercultural Competence’ organized by Lies Sercu (2005). The findings revealed that teachers need additional familiarity and preparation to interculturalize their foreign language education and improve their students’ culture learning profile in terms of intercultural competence.
