Goiter prevalence in Bandar-Abbas school children,2000

Our country is located in an iodine deficient area, and this might be the cause of several health problems, including goiter. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 2200 girls and boys to assess the goiter prevalence and its relationship with demographic characteristics in Bandar-Abbas school children. 30 schools were stratifying randomly selected from all schools. Demographic characteristics were recorded on special forms. Trained physicians, using Perez method, performed physical examination and goiter was graded according to criteria recommended by WHO. The findings showed that goiter was present in 16% of all pupils. The most prevalent goiter in both sexes was grade 1 a. The goiter prevalence was significantly (p<0.001) higher among females (17.38%) than males (10.54%). The highest rate was among 17-20 years old children (18.09%) with a gade al (16%.). Goiter prevalence was high during puberty, therefore it is recommended that more studies should be done about relation between sex hormones and goiter prevalence.
