Evaluation results of the non-surgical treatment of Scheuermannʹs kyphosis in patients that came to Alzahra (Isfahan) and Kashani(shahrekord)Clinics from 1994 to2001

Scheuermannʹs kyphosis is referred to increase spinal column curvature and is a common disease, in adolescent. If the diseases do not diagnosed in early period, it will lead to irreversible structural changes in spine, unpleasant appearance, and early onset arthrosis and diminish functional activity. This disease is cured by non-surgical means in early diagnosis period. A wide spread research like our research (patient and duration of treatment) was not done before. Therefore this research was designed for evaluation of early diagnosis and non-surgical treatment. In a clinical trial and convenience sampling 267 patients who came to Alzahra (Isfahan) and Kashani (Shahrekord) clinics from 1994 to 2001 were enter in our study. The patients were treated by Milwaukee brace according their type .The patients entered in this study with average 64 degree kyphosis and Scheuermann disease type I, II, III, and IV.29 patient excluded for unsuitable brace wearing. 238 of patient observed for clinical and radiogrphical results. Data was gathrering by observation and checklist and analyses by multivariate repeal measures. 168 patient (%70) cured by brace wearing (spinal curve decreased to below 40 degree) there were difference between hyperextension, after discontinuation of brace , the best position in brace wearing between initial kyphosis, after one year and after 18 months(P<0.001).In addition there were significant difference between four groups results. Based on this model interaction between group and treatment was meaningful, thus the treatment process in different groups are different. The data shows early diagnosis and treatment of Scheuermannʹ kyphosis is a acceptable method.
