Importance of MetaNormative Commitments of ValueFree Ideal of Science

مطابق آرمان علم غيرارزش‌بار در ارزيابيِ معرفتيِ نظريه‌هاي علمي تنها ارزش‌هاي معرفتي مي‌توانند نقش مشروع داشته باشند. در اين مقاله نشان خواهيم داد كه اين آموزه بر تصويري از علم و رابطۀ آن با ارزش‌ها مبتني است كه تعهدات فراهنجاري معيني در پي دارد و توجه به اين تعهدات مهم است. براي اين منظور نخست چارچوب كلي نظريۀ فراهنجاري را به‌اختصار معرفي مي‌كنيم و سپس به بيان پيش‌فرض‌هايي مي‌پردازيم كه در پس آرمان علم غيرارزش‌بار دربارۀ رابطۀ علم و ارزش‌ها وجود دارد و سپس تعهدات فراهنجاري مشخصي را از آنها نتيجه مي‌گيريم. همچنين با معرفي اجمالي استدلال‌هايي كه بيشتر در مخالفت با آموزۀ آرمان علم غيرارزش‌بار اقامه شده‌اند، نشان مي‌دهيم كه در اين استدلال‌ها توجهي به پيش‌فرض‌هاي فراهنجاريِ اين آموزه نشان داده نشده است. در نهايت اين پرسش مطرح و پاسخ داده مي‌شود كه آيا در بحث از آرمان علم غيرارزش‌بار، توجه به ملاحظات فراهنجاري ضرورتي دارد؟

According to the valuefree ideal of science, only epistemic values can have a legitimate role in epistemic assessment of scientific theories. In this paper, I seek to show that the valuefree ideal of science is based on a picture of science and its relation with values, that implies certain metanormative assumptions, which are for several reasons worth noting. Accordingly, after a brief introduction of the main issues of the metanormative theory, we will discuss the assumptions of the valuefree ideal about the relation between science and values. Suggesting an explicit articulation of these assumptions, we show their metanormative implications. Then a brief sketch of arguments against the valuefree ideal follows, which makes clear the neutrality of these arguments with respect to metanormative positions. Finally, addressing the question whether it is necessary to take into account metanormative implications of the valuefree ideal, it will be noted that recognizing metanormative commitments of valuefree ideal serves a better understanding of the thesis and also opens a new path for putting forward arguments both for and against the valuefree ideal of science.
