A model for assessing land use compatibility in Golestan Province: introducing a new phase for the second stage of land use planning

In order to assess the rate of environmental compatibility of current and future land uses in Golestan Province, a weighted model was prepared and land use compatibility index values (LUCIV) of the 198 equi - potential environmental units mapped on a semi - detailed level at 1:250,000 scale. Results show that the range of LUCIV in the province is very high (from 1 to 4) and contains all classes of the model (None, Ito high, IV). Differences in number and area percentage of the future land use map units among classes; especially between class I and class IV are very high. The final map contains 31 polygons and their spatial and statistical distributions between classes show meaningful differences. Weighted average of LUCIV in province is 3.26 (class IV), which can be explained easily by the higher area of two natural land uses: forestry and rangeland (following of natureʹs selection during land use priorization) and intense protection of the environment (protective land use) over the vast area of province. The land use compatibility index can be practically useful in estimating current and future development sustainability rates, identification of locations and causes of man - made environmental crises, and environmental impact assessment. Therefore, calculation of this key and practical index is proposed for the second stage of land use planning.
