The Role of Theory in Historical Political Researches: Calls for Rethinking the Role of Theory in Political Science

اين مقاله تلاش مي كند به اين سوال پاسخ دهد كه نظريه در پژوهش هاي سياسي تاريخي چه نقش يا نقش هايي بر عهده دارند؟ در حالي كه برخي از رفتارگرايان و پست مدرنيست ها هر يك به شيوه هاي خاص خود به ترتيب نقش نظريه در پژوهش هاي سياسي را محدود تعريف مي كنند يا در حد نگرشها تقليل مي دهند، مقاله فرارو با روش اسنادي اولا مشخص مي سازد كه نظريه ها در پژوهش هاي سياسي تاريخي حداقل داراي پنج نقش متنوع هستند. برهمين مبنا مقاله نشان مي دهد نظريه ها مي توانند به عنوان راهنمايي براي انتخاب داده هاي پژوهش، به عنوان هدف پژوهش، به عنوان ابزار پژوهش، به عنوان موضوع مورد مناقشه پژوهش و نهايتا به عنوان پيكربندي تعليلي پژوهش عمل نمايند. ثانيا و بر همين اساس، توضيح مي دهد چرا ديدگاه حداقلي يا تقليل گرايانه به نقش نظريه در پژوهش هاي سياسي بايد به نفع نقش چندگانه و متكثر آنها در پژوهش كنار گذاشته شود. نهايتا پژوهش هاي سياسي تاريخي از طريق اين جابجايي محقين علوم سياسي را فرا مي خوانند تا نقش نظريه در پژوهش هاي سياسي را گسترده تر از قبل بازتعريف نمايند.

What is the role or roles of theory in historical political researches? This article tries to answer this question. While behaviorists and postmodernist, each in their own ways, define narrowly the role of theory in historical political research or reduce its role to some aspects, this article by using analytical method, specifies that political theory in historical research has at least five main roles. Accordingly, the article makes clear that theories can play some roles such as a guide for selecting the facts of the research, as a purpose of the research, as a toolkit of the research, as a disputed subject of the research and finally as a casual articulation of the research. Unlike other approaches, firstly, the article emphasizes that the role of the theory in historical political research is diverse and plural ones. Secondly, minimal or reductive vision of the role of theory in political research should be abandoned in favor of the vision that suggests theories have multiple and diverse roles. This means that historical political researches invite political science authors to redefine the role of theory in political researches far more extensive than before.
