امروزه بازار گردشگري سلامت به عنوان يكي از صنايع درآمدزا و رقابتي در دنيا مطرح مي‌باشد. از دهه 1990 عوامل متعددي باعث شد تا گردشگري سلامت در كشورهاي آسيايي رونق بيشتري بيابد.. كارآفريني، بازاريابي و تبليغات گسترده اين كشورها مبني بر ارائه خدمات پزشكي در كنار گردشگري، جذابيت اين مقاصد را براي جذب گردشگران خارجي به منظور درمان افزايش داد.. كشور ايران علي رغم داشتن چشمه‌هاي آب گرم ومعدني فراوان، تاكنون نتوانسته است با برنامه ريزي مناسب نسبت به توسعه زيرساخت‌هاي گردشگري اقدام وسهم قابل قبولي در توسعه گردشگري سلامت داشته باشد. درآمد ناشي از گردشگري سلامت مي‌تواند براي كشور ما كه به حركت در روند توسعه سودآور باشد. پژوهش حاضر با استفاده از روش اسنادي و كتابخانه‌اي سعي دارد ضمن بيان اهميت صنعت گردشگري سلامت در استان اردبيل به شناسايي عوامل پيش برنده و بازدارنده مؤثر بر ارتقاء گردشگري سلامت و تأثير آن بر توسعه پايدار منطقه‌اي كشور بپردازد و با استفاده از مدل swot عوامل داخلي (نقاط قوت و ضعف) و عوامل خارجي (فرصت‌ها و تهديدها) صنعت گردشگري سلامت در استان اردبيل مورد تحليل قرار گرفته و نتايج حاصل از پژوهش نشان مي‌دهد استان اردبيل باتوجه به پيشرفتهاي قابل توجه در عرصه‌ي پزشكي وسلامت در جايگاه قابل توجهي در صنعت گردشگري سلامت و توسعه پايدار منطقه‌اي قرار دارد و اطلاع رساني در مورد جاذبه‌هاي گردشگري سلامت استان اردبيل در سطح بين المللي (مانند آسيا و خاورميانه) و ملي (ايران) به ميزان كافي صورت گرفته است.
